Why You Need To Be Able To Kick Off One Step

Why You Need To Be Able To Kick Off One Step

Have you ever heard the phrase

DON'T KICK OFF ONE STEP ?

We think this is an outdated way to teach kicking, here's why:

With the speed of today's game and the quality of opposition defensive zones, players often need to execute their kicks under immense time pressure.

Whether it's pulling the trigger into the corridor or entering forward 50, the best options only present themselves in very short time windows.

If your kicking technique needs 4-5 steps to build momentum, then your ability to quickly find a teammate is greatly reduced.

The solution is to improve your one-step kicking, not scrap it all together.

We've all seen someone take a single, slow step, lean back and then spray the ball off the side of their boot... the coach usually yells out 'don't kick off one-step'

But...

Shank kicks are not a result of the quantity of steps you take, but the intensity of your approach steps.

If your one-step-kick has enough intensity, you can create enough momentum to avoid all the technical errors that result in a poor kick  (leaning back, stepping slowly etc.) plus, you are able pull the trigger on dangerous kicks.

So...

If you want to be a good ball user in the modern game, practice modern-day kicking drills like the One-Step Circle Kick, the Inside 45 Clap Drill and the Colour Cone Kicking Drill.

These drills are a key part of our 8 Week Kicking Programthe ultimate way to improve your foot skills this off-season.

Over an 8 week period, this online program will develop all 5 of the key components to becoming an elite kicker:
