How much EXTRA training should I do?

How much extra training should I do outside of team sessions?

It's a good question, and one that we get asked a lot.

If you do the same training as everyone else you'll get the same results as everyone else.

So if you want to stand out, you need to be doing extra work.

But how much is too much? How do we avoid overtraining? What type of extra training should I do?

The answer is not very sexy, but it is VERY important...

It will be different for everyone.

So, we encourage all players to perform the following exercise:

Step 1: Write down your weekly training commitments in a table.

If you're not sure where to start, you can download our Free AFL Training Workload Template

Step 2: Ensure you have at least one entire day off from training.

Shuffle things around until you have at least one ENTIRE day off from training (two days is ideal). Including this recovery day is important to ensure you can train hard on the other days.

Step 3: Fill in every other available time-slot with extra sessions.

We recommend having a theme for each session (e.g. Clean Hands, Kicking, Speed & Agility, Mobility etc.). This way you can focus in on the areas YOU need to improve YOUR game. Keep the sessions short. 30-40 minutes is a good guide... 'extra sessions' should be stimulating not fatiguing.

Step 4: Keep yourself accountable.

Training with a friend or in a small group is a great way to keep yourself consistent. If you live on the Gold Coast, we have a small training squad you can join. Learn more about the 40 minute Breakfast Club Sessions below.
